A & G Optique, Toorak: Dry Eye Care and Handmade Spectacles in Toorak Village Since 2003

For more than two decades, A & G Optique has been looking after the eyes of Toorak locals from the heart of Toorak Village. The practice, at Shop 9, 521 Toorak Road, offers general optometry and eyewear, and has built a particular reputation for helping people with dry eyes.

Experienced optometry care

Optometrist Dr Gene Virtser (BOptom, PCOT (Melb)) has practised since 2000 and the practice has been in Toorak Village since 2003. Dr Virtser provides general optometry services and the practice diagnoses and treats a range of eye conditions, alongside eyewear and service, including a range of handmade spectacles.

A special interest in dry eye

Dry eye has been a focus for Dr Virtser throughout his years in Toorak. The practice explains that dry eye syndrome, meibomian gland dysfunction and blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids) are the most common causes of dry eyes. Symptoms can include red, flaky skin on the eyelids and sore, red, gritty eyes, and some people feel as though their eyes are stuck together in the morning.

Dr Virtser was one of the first optometrists to use IPL (intense pulsed light) in Melbourne, and the practice says it was the first to perform IPL meibomian gland treatments in the city. It offers a range of treatments, including IPL, Rexon-Eye, BlephEx, Blephasteam, meibomian gland manipulation, and supplements and drops, often in combination.

A plan for every patient

Every dry eye patient receives a personalised plan to follow at home, and any in-practice procedures are also planned individually. Patients are assessed regularly so their progress can be tracked. The practice's FAQ notes that you should allow about an hour for an initial assessment and treatment, and that your medical history is checked first.
