Bloomin’ Marvellous Flower School: Where Passion, Blooms and Community Flourish in Malvern East

In the leafy streets of Malvern East, just a short stroll from Chadstone Shopping Centre, a light-filled studio hums with quiet creativity, the scent of seasonal blooms and the soft clink of teacups. This is Bloomin’ Marvellous Flower School, a welcoming space where beginners and flower lovers alike discover the joy of floristry under the guidance of one of Melbourne’s most experienced and passionate teachers.

Founded by Jemina Richards and launched in December 2019, the school has quickly become a favourite among those seeking more than just a class — they come for connection, calm and the simple pleasure of creating something beautiful with their own hands.

A Lifetime Among Flowers

Jemina’s story is rooted in a lifelong love of flowers. She began her apprenticeship at the renowned Myer Florist in Melbourne’s city store and, by the age of 20, was already running her own florist shop on the Mornington Peninsula. Over more than 35 years she has collaborated with some of the industry’s best, creating florals for prestigious events including the Melbourne Grand Prix, Spring Racing Carnival and the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show.

Her passion for teaching was ignited while working as head teacher at Victoria Whitelaw School of Flowers. Holding both a Certificate III in Floristry and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, Jemina later returned full circle to Box Hill Institute — the place where she once studied — as part of the teaching faculty. “Teaching for me is seeing others grow,” she says. That philosophy sits at the heart of everything Bloomin’ Marvellous offers.

A Space Designed for Joy and Connection

Step inside the studio at 77 Chadstone Road and you are greeted by stunning floral wall displays, a luxurious teal velvet couch and long tables arranged in a cosy semi-circle. Natural light floods the space, and everything is set out ready for students to begin. It is the kind of room that invites you to slow down, breathe and simply enjoy the process.

Many classes include thoughtful extras that turn a workshop into a proper treat: a cup of tea on arrival, high tea, and a glass of champagne or sparkling wine. Private workshops are popular for hens’ parties, birthdays, corporate groups and special celebrations, creating an atmosphere that feels both educational and celebratory.

Workshops for Every Level of Curiosity

Whether you have never arranged a stem in your life or simply want to refine your skills, the classes are designed with accessibility and fun at their core. Emphasis is placed on the basic elements of design, practical techniques, and an appreciation of Mother Nature’s seasonal offerings.

Popular workshops include:

  • Beginner floristry and posy arrangements
  • Tall seasonal blooms in a vase
  • Bridal floristry fundamentals
  • Preserved and dried flower arrangements
  • Flower crowns (including options for children’s parties)
  • Sip-and-create sessions and high-tea experiences

Students leave with a finished arrangement they can take home, new skills they can use every day, and often a renewed sense of calm. As one regular student put it, “I’m always thinking of my next class.”

More Than a Class — A Community

What sets Bloomin’ Marvellous apart is the sense of community it fosters. Generations of women (and the occasional man) share tables, stories and laughter while working with fresh seasonal blooms and lush foliage. Many return again and again, not only for the flowers but for the friendships and the restorative experience of creating something beautiful by hand.

Jemina believes flowers have a quiet power. “It’s not rocket science what we florists do,” she reflects, “but I do think in a lot of ways it does give a little bit of happiness. That’s the difference a bunch of flowers can have.”
