Eden Espresso: Malvern’s Enduring Neighbourhood Haven – Connecting and Caffeinating for Nearly 18 Years

Tucked along the bustling stretch of Glenferrie Road in the heart of Malvern, Eden Espresso has quietly become one of Stonnington’s most cherished local institutions. Established on 8 August 2008, this cosy café has spent almost 18 years doing exactly what its tagline promises: connecting and caffeinating the Malvern community.

Owned and run by Jed Hawkins (an Old Scotch College boy from the class of 2001), Eden Espresso feels less like a business and more like a familiar living room that just happens to serve excellent coffee and generous, thoughtfully prepared food. Regulars know the owner by name; he still makes the rounds of the tables, checking on guests and chatting as if every customer is an old friend.

The café occupies a bright, welcoming spot at 115 Glenferrie Road, Malvern VIC 3144. Large glass doors open onto outdoor seating that catches the morning sun, while inside the warm, unpretentious space is anchored by the antique fireplace that many locals mention as part of the café’s character. It is the kind of place where you can linger over the weekend papers, catch up with friends, or simply watch the Glenferrie Road world go by with a proper coffee in hand.

The Food: Generous, Honest and Full of Flavour

Eden Espresso’s all-day breakfast and lunch menu is built around quality ingredients and generous portions. Signature dishes that keep people coming back include:

  • Challah French Toast – thick slices of challah dusted in cinnamon sugar, served with vanilla mascarpone, fresh banana and strawberries, and a drizzle of maple syrup.
  • Middle Eastern Eggs – two eggs poached in a spiced tomato concasse, topped with pan-fried halloumi and crusty Turkish bread.
  • Bacon Benedict – poached eggs on Noisette’s sourdough with baby spinach, full rashers of grilled bacon and house-made hollandaise.
  • Mushies on Toast – seasonal mushrooms cooked with fresh herbs, finished with feta and truffle oil on multi-grain toast.
  • The Recovery – a hearty plate of hash brown, poached eggs, avocado, spinach and tomato under a blanket of hollandaise.

There is also a strong showing of lighter options – Eden Bircher, smashed avocado on rye, cauliflower and quinoa salad, and several vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free choices clearly marked. Sandwiches such as the Reuben (Lewis & Son pastrami, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing on dark rye) and the bacon sandwich with potato rosti are popular lunchtime choices.

Coffee is taken seriously without being precious. A well-made flat white, latte or espresso forms the backbone of the day, while fresh juices, organic loose-leaf teas, chai, matcha and house milkshakes round out the drinks list. A modest selection of local wines is available for those lingering into the early afternoon.

A True Local Fixture

What sets Eden Espresso apart is its deep roots in the Malvern community. Jed and his team have weathered more than 17 years of changing café trends by staying true to simple values: good coffee, generous plates, friendly service and being open when locals need them. The café opens early (7 am weekdays, 8 am weekends) and stays open every day of the year except Christmas Day, including all public holidays and long weekends.

It is the kind of place that supports local causes, offers free coffee to early Anzac Day dawn-service attendees, and still feels personal even as it has become a neighbourhood institution. High chairs, outdoor seating, wheelchair access and a relaxed, dog-friendly outdoor area make it genuinely welcoming for families and regulars alike.
