In the heart of Melbourne’s Bayside, tucked inside a light-filled mid-century warehouse on Arnold Street in Cheltenham, something quietly radical is happening. Adults are reclaiming the barre — not as a nostalgia exercise or a fitness trend, but as a serious, joyful, lifelong practice. At the Adult Ballet Centre, classical ballet is no longer reserved for the young or the impossibly lean. Here, every body is a ballet body.

Established in 2018, the Adult Ballet Centre® was created by a team of former professional dancers, educators and business minds who saw a clear gap in Melbourne’s dance landscape. Founder and Director Lee Harrison (often referred to as Lee-Anne) and Co-Director/Manager Mollie Harrison built a studio dedicated exclusively to adults. Their vision was simple yet ambitious: to offer professional-level classical ballet and contemporary training in an environment that is inspiring, inclusive and genuinely artistic.
The result is a boutique space that feels both refined and welcoming. High ceilings, white walls, abundant natural light, professional sprung floors with Tarkett surfaces, and carefully placed ballet barres create a setting designed specifically for adult bodies. The studio includes change-room facilities, a kitchenette and a reception lounge, and is enhanced by artwork from Victorian artist Vanessa Oter. Located at Factory 6, 3–5 Arnold Street, Cheltenham — a short walk from Southland Station with street parking nearby — the centre sits on the lands of the Bunurong People of the Kulin Nation.
A Clear Pathway: Steady, Strength, Soar
What sets the Adult Ballet Centre apart is its structured training pathway, developed specifically for adult learners.
- Steady (Levels 1–2) welcomes complete beginners and those returning after long absences. Introduction to Classical Ballet and Foundation classes focus on posture, alignment, basic positions, musicality and building confidence without pressure.
- Strength (Levels 3–4) develops cleaner technique, controlled turns, allegro and stamina for dancers who are training consistently.
- Soar (Levels 5–6 and Extension Repertoire) challenges intermediate and advanced dancers with complex work, artistry and performance preparation.
Complementary classes in contemporary dance, floor barre conditioning, pointe (for those ready), private coaching and the Australian Institute of Classical Dance (AICD) Adult Ballet Assessment Programme complete the offering. Classes run six days a week with minimal term breaks, so dancers can maintain momentum year-round.

The centre’s signature philosophy is captured in its unofficial motto: “No Leotards Required.” Participants are encouraged to wear whatever makes them feel comfortable. Body positivity is not a marketing slogan here — it is lived daily. Teachers treat every dancer with the same respect and high expectation, regardless of age, size, shape or previous experience. Many students describe the studio as the first place they have felt truly seen as adult dancers.
Community, Performance and Real Progress
Beyond technique, the Adult Ballet Centre fosters a genuine community. Dancers form friendships, support one another through challenges, and celebrate progress together. The annual Performance Season — including the 2026 showcase Reflections at Shirley Burke Theatre in Parkdale — gives adult dancers the opportunity to experience the stage in a supportive, professional environment. Monthly repertoire ateliers, masterclasses with guest artists, and special events further enrich the journey.
Testimonials from students speak consistently of transformation. Many who arrived nervous or self-conscious now describe the studio as their “ballet home.” They speak of improved posture, stronger cores, better balance, mental clarity and a renewed sense of joy. Ballet, as practised here, becomes both physical discipline and moving meditation.

In a world that often tells adults to leave certain dreams behind, the Adult Ballet Centre offers a quiet, powerful counter-argument: it is never too late to begin, or to return, to the barre.
