Tucked inside Tok H Centre at 459 Toorak Road, Sushi Sushi Tok H is the sort of neighbourhood stop that quietly earns its regulars. Shoppers duck in after Woolworths, office workers collect a pack on the way back to the Tok Corporate Centre upstairs, and families pick up a platter before a gathering. The official store description puts it neatly: sushi, bento boxes and Japanese mains, served in a pared-back space with traditional prints on the walls.
It is not a destination tasting-menu restaurant. It is something Toorak uses every day — fresh sushi made for people who want Japanese flavour without a booking, a long wait or a formal dining room.
The brand behind the counter
Sushi Sushi began in 1998 in Box Hill with a simple idea: take sushi out of high-end Japanese restaurants and make it a fresh, healthy meal people could grab on the go. That first store sat behind a fish shop. The co-founders asked a chef to create a hand roll that could be sold quickly, affordably and still taste like proper sushi.
Nearly three decades later the chain is one of Australia’s largest sushi retailers, with around 180 stores across the country (and a presence in New Zealand). The company has said its success rests on consistency: premium Japanese-inspired ingredients, local fresh produce, and product made fresh each day. The core format has changed little because the hand roll itself has stood the test of time.
In 2019 the business was acquired by Odyssey Private Equity. In February 2026 it was sold again, this time to Japan’s Genki Global Dining Concepts, a global Japanese dining group. For customers at Tok H, the day-to-day experience is unchanged: the same counter, the same packs, the same made-fresh-daily promise.
Where it sits in Toorak
Tok H Centre sits on Toorak Road, opposite Mathoura Road, in the middle of Toorak Village. It is a compact three-level centre rather than a sprawling mall: Woolworths, Chemist Warehouse, Woodfrog Bakery, Uppercuts Meat, Fish n Grill, Caffe E Cucina, a barber, dry cleaning and alterations, and a cluster of medical and beauty suites on the upper level. Sushi Sushi is Shop 11.
That mix matters. People already come here for groceries, scripts, coffee and appointments. Sushi Sushi sits in that daily circuit. You can park, shop, collect sushi and be back on Toorak Road in minutes.
Parking is one of the centre’s practical advantages. Wilson’s undercover and rooftop car park is entered from Jackson Street. The first 90 minutes are free, which is usually enough for a supermarket run plus lunch. There is also free one-hour street parking around the village and tram route 58 along Toorak Road. South Yarra and Hawksburn stations are a short connection away.
What to order
The Tok H menu follows the national Sushi Sushi range, with white-rice hand rolls as the everyday hero and brown rice available for those who prefer it.
Popular hand rolls include cooked tuna and avocado, salmon and avocado, crispy chicken, prawn and avocado, California, teriyaki chicken, tofu and cucumber, and vegetarian combinations. Prices sit in the everyday-lunch bracket — typically around five dollars a roll, depending on filling.
Packs and bento boxes are the next step up. Regulars order:
- Assorted sushi packs with a mix of nigiri and rolls
- Bento boxes with sashimi slices, nigiri, inari and mini rolls, often served with seaweed salad or pickled squid salad
- Deluxe and sashimi packs
- Favourites, crispy chicken, tobiko and vegetarian packs
- Spicy crunchy cooked tuna and California roll packs
Salads — seaweed, seafood and pickled squid — sit alongside drinks such as iced tea and juices. Nothing on the counter is trying to reinvent sushi. The appeal is freshness, speed and a familiar range that works for one person or a desk of four.
Platters and catering
This is where the Toorak store is especially useful. Sushi Sushi platters are made fresh to order each day. Options include assorted hand-roll platters, sushi deluxe, sashimi deluxe, all-stars, vegetarian uramaki, salmon supreme and chicken-lover platters.
Minimum notice is four hours. Orders over $300 should be placed at least a day in advance. That makes the store practical for office lunches at the corporate suites upstairs, school events, family gatherings and last-minute entertaining — provided you do not leave it until mid-afternoon.
Corporate and general catering can also be arranged through the national website. Dietary filters on sushisushi.com.au help with allergens and picky eaters; a full allergen statement is published as a downloadable PDF.
A note on dietaries: many items contain wheat, soy, fish, egg or sesame. Vegetarian and vegan packs exist, but always check the current filter or ask at the counter. Staff can usually steer you to a safe option if you flag a requirement early.
Why locals keep using it
Toorak is not short of Japanese dining. Nearby you will find independent sushi bars and sit-down restaurants. Sushi Sushi occupies a different slot. It is the reliable, mid-priced, made-today option when you are already at Tok H, when you need a platter without a restaurant wait, or when the children will eat California rolls and you want salmon and avocado for yourself.
Delivery listings (Uber Eats and DoorDash) typically rate the Toorak store around 4.6 from hundreds of orders. Comments tend to mention freshness, packaging and the ability to tweak an assorted pack. Hours for the shop itself are listed as 9.00am to 5.00pm daily; delivery windows sometimes close a little earlier. It is worth confirming on the day if you are arriving late afternoon.
The space itself is modest — a counter, traditional prints, a queue that moves. You are not paying for atmosphere. You are paying for sushi that was rolled that morning and a location that fits the way Toorak actually shops.
