Tucked away at 81 Chadstone Road in Malvern East, The South Levain is the sort of neighbourhood bakery that makes you slow down. The scent of butter, caramelised sugar and freshly baked sourdough drifts onto the pavement each morning. Inside, golden croissants sit in neat rows beside crusty loaves, fruit tarts and quiches still warm from the oven. This is not a high-volume chain. It is a small, family-run boulangerie where every batch is made by hand, in small quantities, using time-honoured French techniques and the finest locally sourced ingredients.
The story begins with Joanna Jean Louis, head pâtissier and co-founder. Born in Mauritius, she spent a formative year in Paris mastering the exacting craft of French baking — lamination, fermentation, the precise temperature of butter, the long, slow rise of a proper levain. When she and her brother Ben opened The South Levain, they brought those skills home and gave them a distinctly personal flavour. The result is a bakery that feels both classically French and quietly Mauritian: textbook croissants au beurre and pain au chocolat sit alongside occasional weekend specials of pâté la viande, feuilleté custard and other island treats that sell out almost as soon as they leave the oven.
Everything is baked on site, every day. The signature croissant is laminated in-house and baked until the layers shatter at the first bite. Sourdough loaves — including the popular cranberry and white chocolate and the olive, walnut and rosemary — ferment slowly and emerge with a deep, caramelised crust. Quiches are made with free-range eggs, Otway smoked ham and seasonal vegetables. Larger celebration cakes, lemon meringue tarts, Basque cheesecakes and custom birthday cakes are available to order. For gatherings there is a full catering menu of mini pies, sausage rolls, sliders, salad platters and cheese boards.
The bakery’s philosophy is simple and consistent: exceptional food starts with exceptional ingredients, and the community comes first. Locally sourced produce is preferred wherever possible. Batches stay small so quality never slips. Customers regularly praise the team’s willingness to accommodate allergies and preferences — a small but telling sign of the care that runs through the business.
Trading hours are those of a proper bakery rather than a café that stays open all afternoon. Monday to Friday the doors open at 8.00am and close at 1.30pm; weekends begin at 8.30am. The early finish is deliberate — once the day’s bake is sold, the team starts again for the next morning. Pre-orders via the website are encouraged, especially for catering and celebration cakes, because popular items disappear quickly.
The South Levain has quietly become a local favourite. Regulars speak of it as one of the best bakeries in Melbourne’s inner south-east — not because it shouts the loudest, but because the pastry is consistently excellent and the welcome is warm. On selected weekends the Mauritian specials appear, drawing families who grew up with those flavours and newcomers who simply want something different. It is the kind of place that turns a Saturday morning errand into a small ritual.
If you live in Malvern East, Armadale, Malvern or the surrounding suburbs, or if you are simply passing along Chadstone Road, it is worth arriving early. Take home a bag of croissants, a loaf of sourdough and perhaps a slice of quiche for later. You will taste the Paris training, the Mauritian hospitality and the quiet pride of a family who bake because they love it.
