The Bob Mann Basketball Academy: Shaping Champions and Character

The Bob Mann Basketball Academy: Shaping Champions and Character for Juniors

In the heart of Melbourne, Victoria, where basketball pulses through the veins of one of Australia’s most competitive sporting regions, the Bob Mann Basketball Academy (BMBA) stands as a beacon of excellence. Founded by Bob Mann, a veteran coach with over three decades of experience, the academy is more than just a training ground for aspiring athletes—it’s a transformative platform dedicated to building better players and mentoring better people. The BMBA is carving out a unique space in Victoria’s basketball landscape, blending elite coaching, innovative programmes, and a commitment to personal development.

A Coach’s Journey: From Backyard to Basketball Legacy

Bob Mann’s story in basketball began in 1990, when he transitioned from Australian Rules Football to coaching basketball with no prior knowledge of the sport. Starting with just five children in his backyard, Mann’s passion and determination led him to immerse himself in the game. Through years of studying books, attending clinics, and gaining hands-on experience, he pieced together the “coaching jigsaw puzzle” and built a remarkable career. His journey has seen him coach at nearly every level in Victoria, one of Australia’s toughest basketball states, where Melbourne’s competitions are renowned for their depth and intensity.

Mann’s coaching has produced tangible results: players under his tutelage have represented Victoria and Australia, secured US college scholarships, and even reached the professional ranks of the National Basketball League (NBL). Notable alumni include Owen Odigie, who played for Melbourne United, and Corey Maynard, who competed at NCAA Division 1 level before joining the NBL. Mann’s ability to develop talent is matched by his passion for mentoring, ensuring his players grow not just as athletes but as individuals.

The BMBA Vision: A New Approach to Basketball

Frustrated by the politics and administrative hurdles that often overshadow player development in traditional club structures, Mann founded the BMBA to offer a fresh approach. His vision is clear: to create an academy that prioritises elite coaching, structured skill development, and a values-driven environment. “Basketball is like a game of chess with humans as the pieces,” Mann has said, emphasising the strategic depth of the sport and the need for a disciplined, long-term approach to player growth.

The BMBA’s mission is threefold: to develop the abilities of committed players with above-average talent, to educate and train coaches to maximise their impact, and to provide parents with training programs that their children can enjoy, regardless of their standard. At its core, the academy aims to foster an environment free from cliques and politics, where hard work and improvement are rewarded. Mann’s ultimate ambition is to establish basketball training programs and competitions second to none in Melbourne that focus on junior players development while providing a robust academic education—a goal that reflects his belief in balancing athletic and personal growth.

Programmes and Impact: Building Skills and Community

As of March 2025, the BMBA is gaining momentum with new teams, uniforms, and venues. The academy has secured court space at the state-of-the-art Stonnington Sports Centre, home to the Margaret Connellan Stadium, a four-court venue with modern facilities. From Term One 2026, the BMBA intends to launch junior competitions for boys and girls in the Under-10, Under-12, Under-14, Under-16, and Under-18 age groups, to be held on Saturdays. These competitions, known as the BMBA Invitational, introduce a new tournament format that focuses on player and team development, exemplifying the academy’s innovative approach.

The BMBA also runs holiday camps, such as the June Holiday Basketball Camp, and its “Kids First Basketball” programme, designed to introduce children aged 5 to 10 to the sport in a fun, supportive setting. For older players, the academy offers “Basketball Plus Training,” a structured programme that builds skills term by term. The BMBA Templar Warriors, the academy’s flagship teams, compete in the Dandenong Basketball Association, with a focus on providing high-level coaching and competitive opportunities.

Just as important is the BMBA’s commitment to mentoring its juniors not just in basketball but also in the development of character traits of discipline, resilience and integrity. This sense of legacy is reinforced by the academy’s mascot, “The Templars,” inspired by the Knights Templar from medieval times and their code of honour. Players are encouraged to uphold values of respect, discipline, and pride, fostering a culture that extends beyond the court.

Looking Ahead: Expansion and Ambition

The BMBA is not content to rest on its laurels. Mann is actively seeking investors to support the academy’s growth, with plans for a dedicated training facility and a podcast to share knowledge and promote events. The academy is also exploring basketball tours to regional and interstate locations, offering players unique experiences and exposure. With access to up to six courts in the Stonnington Local Government Area, the BMBA is poised to expand its reach and impact.

Mann’s holistic approach sets the BMBA apart from other basketball programmes in Melbourne, such as No Limits Basketball, Hoop City, and the NBA Basketball School Australia. While these organisations focus heavily on elite skill development, the BMBA’s emphasis on character, mentorship, and accessible competitions makes it a unique offering for players and families seeking a balanced, values-driven experience.

A Legacy in the Making

For Bob Mann, the BMBA is the culmination of a 35-year journey in basketball—a journey that began with humble beginnings and has grown into a thriving academy with a bold vision. “This is the most exciting undertaking of my career,” Mann says, and for the young athletes who join the BMBA, it’s a chance to be part of something special. With a focus on building better players and better people, the Bob Mann Basketball Academy is not just shaping the future of basketball in Victoria—it’s shaping the lives of those who step onto its courts.
