The Royal Nut Company: A Family Legacy of Quality Nuts and Wholesome Delights
In the bustling suburb of Malvern, Victoria, amid the leafy streets and vibrant community, stands a gem of Australian food retail: the Royal Nut Company. For nearly four decades, this family-owned enterprise has been delighting customers with an unparalleled selection of premium nuts, dried fruits, spices, and health foods. What began as a modest shop in Melbourne’s multicultural heart has blossomed into a national powerhouse, supplying some of Australia’s largest supermarkets while maintaining its commitment to quality, innovation, and community. As we explore the story of the Royal Nut Company, it’s clear that their success is rooted in passion, perseverance, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of good food.
A Humble Beginning in Brunswick
The Royal Nut Company’s journey dates back to 1987, when it was established in Brunswick, a suburb known for its diverse migrant communities. In those early days, the store catered to a melting pot of cultures, offering essentials like cashew nuts for Indian desserts, almonds for Middle Eastern sweets, and peanuts for Southeast Asian dishes. Sanjay Mirchandani, the current Managing Director, fondly recalls the atmosphere resembling a bustling marketplace from a fairy tale, alive with aromas and vibrant exchanges.
The turning point came in the early 2000s when Prakash Mirchandani, Sanjay’s father, acquired the business. Under his stewardship, the company began to expand, focusing on sourcing the finest ingredients from around the world while prioritising Australian producers. By 2019, Sanjay, an engineer with experience at BHP in South America, returned to take the helm as Managing Director. His fresh perspective infused the operation with modern strategies, propelling growth without losing the family touch that defines the brand.
Today, approaching its 38th year, the Royal Nut Company employs nearly 100 people and operates from a state-of-the-art 9,000-square-metre facility in Scoresby, completed in 2023. This move consolidated operations from smaller sites in Brunswick and Rowville, enhancing efficiency with upgraded equipment, integrated software, and dedicated spaces for product development. Sanjay emphasises the importance of long-term planning: “You can’t run this place like a small business. I’m told that only five per cent of small to medium businesses have a long-term business plan.” This forward-thinking approach has enabled the company to weather economic challenges and aim to replicate 37 years of growth in the next five to ten.
A Cornucopia of Products: Quality at the Core
At the heart of the Royal Nut Company’s appeal is its vast array of over 1,000 product lines, meticulously sourced, processed, and packaged to the highest standards. Categories span nuts (from almonds to Brazil nuts), nut spreads, dried fruits (such as apricots and blueberries), legumes and grains, health foods, confectionery, snack foods, and an extensive spice selection. Unique offerings include innovative blends like the Coco-nut Blend and Superfood Sprinkle, designed for health-conscious consumers seeking energising additions to meals.
Quality is non-negotiable. The company holds certifications for organic, Kosher, and Halal products, ensuring inclusivity and trust. Transparent packaging allows customers to see the freshness, and there’s a strong emphasis on honesty—no inflated claims, just premium ingredients. Sustainability is woven into operations, with a preference for Australian-made goods and support for local farmers, balanced by global sourcing for the best flavours.
Beyond retail, the company wholesales to restaurants, cafes, hotels, and major chains like Coles and Woolworths, with a fleet of trucks handling local deliveries. Online shopping offers Australia-wide delivery, making their products accessible to all. Sanjay notes the strategy of differentiation: rather than competing on price, they focus on value, lean operations, and constant innovation.

Plans are underway to expand the retail footprint further, promising even greater accessibility.
Family Values and Community Focus
What truly sets the Royal Nut Company apart is its family ethos. Every aspect of the business—from ordering to delivery—involves family members, fostering a hands-on, passionate environment. The workforce reflects Melbourne’s diversity, with long-serving employees (some over 20 years) and initiatives to attract more women and multicultural staff. The new Scoresby facility even includes employee perks like a quiet room, based on staff feedback.
Sanjay’s vision is clear: to become Australia’s most iconic provider of fine foods, bringing “health and happiness” through innovative culinary ideas and shared knowledge. In a competitive market, their resilience shines, as Sanjay asserts: “Whilst most businesses are hunkering down and preserving cash, we are doubling down and if we can ride through this tricky economic time – we will come out in a fantastic position.”
