Most of us choose a perfume from a shelf. At Fragranzi MYO Perfumes on Chapel Street, South Yarra, you make your own. Fragranzi calls it the most personal fragrance you'll ever wear, and the reason is simple: you design it. Its make-your-own perfume studio at 559 Chapel Street is open seven days a week for walk-ins and online bookings.

How it works
Fragranzi uses a professionally developed system to guide you. You choose a starter blend, adjust it to your taste, give it a name and leave about an hour later with your own labelled bottle. You can come on your own, as a couple or with a group of three, four or more, and the studio also hosts hens' parties and corporate groups. Your recipe is kept on file, so you can order more of your creation in future, and gift vouchers are available if you'd rather give the experience to someone else.
Customer reviews on the website describe the staff as kind, patient and knowledgeable, and the experience as unhurried. Many people come back again and again, some for birthdays and Christmas, others as a team day out of the office.
Where science meets art
Fragranzi's perfumer is Conan Fee, a professor at the University of Canterbury, where he is the founding head of its School of Product Design. He has been named on Stanford University's list of the world's top 2% of research scientists. His interests have always spanned science and the arts: he earned piano performance diplomas while studying chemical engineering. He teaches chemical formulation design, which includes fragrance design, and always told his students they should start their own businesses.
During the first year of COVID-19 lockdowns he took his own advice, founding Fragranzi with his partner Glenda. They saw an opportunity to open a full working perfumery that would sell Conan's fine fragrance creations and also bring the art of perfume-making to everyone.

A patent-pending method
Traditionally, perfumery takes a great deal of knowledge, patience and practical experience. Conan invented an entirely new way for untrained people to design their own fragrances quickly and conveniently. With a patent pending, Fragranzi's in-house bespoke design system lets anyone methodically test a number of fragrance combinations before committing to mixing the actual ingredients. That method is now at the heart of everything the studio does, from walk-in customers to large groups.
A different philosophy of fragrance
Fragranzi has firm views about the fragrance industry. It believes only you truly know what you like, that famous names are rarely about authentic interest in perfume, and that expensive brands are no guarantee of quality. Above all, it believes that with the right tools, anyone can create a great perfume that is uniquely theirs. The studio also offers both eau de toilette and the longer-lasting, more concentrated eau de parfum, and staff can advise on which suits you.

All about people
In the end, Fragranzi says, it's about people. The team loves the joy and sharing they see every day as people make their own fragrances: friends and family celebrating a special occasion, or someone enjoying valuable "me" time with scents that evoke memories. The business also donates a portion of its monthly sales to Doctors Without Borders.
