Highett Neighbourhood Community House, Highett: Low-Cost Classes and Social Groups for All Ages, 30 Years On

Highett Neighbourhood Community House (HNCH) has been part of local life for more than 30 years. Together with Hampton Community Centre, it aims to engage the community in social, educational and recreational activities, with low-cost programs for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.

From association to community house

HNCH began as the Highett Community Association more than 30 years ago, originally to provide programs and activities for residents of a local government housing estate. As its focus broadened to the wider community, it relocated to the old scout hall in Livingston Street and changed its name, and in 2010 it joined forces with Highett Seniors Club and Highett Greek Seniors in the refurbished Seniors Club across from the old scout hall. Today the house at 2 Livingston Street is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm.

Activities are kept low cost "so there are no barriers to participation", and the centres say they value learning, inclusion, integrity, innovation and commitment. Its sister centre, Hampton Community Centre at 14 Willis Street, Hampton, traces its roots to the 1950s and community campaigner Miss May Ivison.

Something for everyone

The program is grouped into workshops, health and fitness, creative classes, education and language, dance, music and theatre, social and support groups, children and teens, and all-abilities activities. The centre publishes a 2026 course guide to download, and you can subscribe to its eNewsletter to be the first to know about new classes, workshops and events. If there is a class you would like to see, the centre invites you to share feedback on its courses.

Volunteer, join or hire a space

There are plenty of ways to be involved: become a member, volunteer, or donate. The centre also has spaces for hire, and even invites locals with limited room at home to host a dinner party there.
