Building Better Players and Better People: BMBA Basketball at Stonnington Sports Centre, Malvern East

In the bustling heart of Melbourne’s south-east, where the energy of Chadstone Shopping Centre meets the quiet residential streets of Malvern East, a distinctive junior basketball programme is quietly shaping the next generation of athletes and young people. BMBA Basketball (Bob Mann Basketball Academy), based at the modern Stonnington Sports Centre, offers far more than drills and match play. It delivers structured, independent coaching designed to develop skilled, resilient and well-rounded juniors in one of Australia’s most competitive basketball environments.

A Coach with More Than Three Decades of Experience

Bob Mann founded BMBA after more than 30 years immersed in Victorian basketball. His journey began in 1990 when, with no prior basketball background, he switched from Australian Rules Football and started coaching five children in a backyard. Through relentless self-education — books, clinics, observation and practical experience — he built a deep understanding of the game and a reputation for developing players at almost every level in Victoria.

Players coached by Mann have gone on to represent Victoria and Australia, earn United States college scholarships, and reach the National Basketball League. He has coached at club, representative and university levels, including time with Melbourne University programmes. Frustrated by the politics and competing priorities that can sometimes overshadow genuine player development in traditional structures, Mann created BMBA as an independent academy focused purely on coaching quality, long-term improvement and character.

His philosophy is straightforward and consistent: “At BMBA we work to make good players better.” Basketball is treated as a strategic game that rewards effort, intelligence and discipline. Equally important is the development of personal qualities — respect, resilience, integrity and pride — that transfer beyond the court.

A Premium Home at Stonnington Sports Centre

BMBA operates from the state-of-the-art Stonnington Sports Centre at 32b Chadstone Road, Malvern East, adjacent to Chadstone Shopping Centre. The venue, which includes Margaret Connellan Stadium, provides modern indoor courts, excellent lighting, spectator seating and professional facilities. Access to multiple courts allows for efficient, high-quality training sessions and competitive matches without the constraints sometimes experienced at smaller or older venues.

The location is highly convenient for families across Stonnington and surrounding areas, with easy access from the Monash Freeway and public transport links. Being next to one of Melbourne’s major shopping and dining hubs makes it practical for parents while creating a vibrant, central base for the academy.

Programmes Designed for Development at Every Stage

BMBA offers a clear pathway for juniors of different ages and abilities:

  • After-School Training Programmes — Structured skill development sessions held during school terms at Stonnington Sports Centre (and previously other local venues). These focus on fundamental techniques, basketball IQ, athletic movement and game understanding in a progressive, term-by-term format.
  • Basketball Plus / Individual Development — Higher-intensity training aimed at committed players seeking to accelerate their progress.
  • Kids First Basketball — Introductory programmes for younger children (typically 5–10 years) that emphasise fun, basic skills, confidence and a positive first experience of the sport.
  • Competitive Teams – BMBA Templar Warriors — Teams competing in established junior competitions (including Dandenong Basketball Association pathways) while preparing for BMBA’s own invitational-style competitions. Training and home games take place at Stonnington Sports Centre, with a strong emphasis on team culture and collective improvement.
  • School Holiday Camps — Intensive multi-day programmes that combine skill work, games, challenges and social interaction during school breaks.
  • School Clinics and Community Sessions — On-site or outreach clinics that bring quality coaching into local schools and community settings.

The academy’s mascot and team identity draw inspiration from the Knights Templar, reinforcing values of discipline, honour and mutual support. Players are encouraged to take pride in their effort and conduct both on and off the court.

What Sets BMBA Apart

Several features distinguish BMBA in Melbourne’s crowded junior basketball landscape:

  • Independent coaching free from club political pressures.
  • A dual focus on technical excellence and character development.
  • Transparent communication with parents about progress and expectations.
  • Access to high-quality multi-court facilities in a central Stonnington location.
  • A clear developmental pathway from introductory sessions through to competitive teams.
  • An experienced head coach who remains hands-on and personally invested in every programme.

Parents frequently note the professional yet supportive atmosphere, the emphasis on continuous improvement rather than short-term results, and the sense that their children are being mentored as people as well as players.

Looking Ahead

BMBA continues to expand its footprint in the Stonnington local government area. Plans include further development of local competitions, additional training options, possible regional and interstate opportunities, and ongoing investment in coaching education. The academy remains open to families seeking a values-driven, high-standard environment for their children’s basketball journey.
