Zia Rina’s Cucina: Heartfelt Italian Hospitality on High Street, Armadale

Nestled on High Street in the heart of Armadale, within Melbourne’s City of Stonnington, Zia Rina’s Cucina (often simply called Rina’s) is a compact, much-loved neighbourhood trattoria that feels more like stepping into a relative’s kitchen than a restaurant. With around 30 seats, white tablecloths, tealight candles, and a warm, unpretentious atmosphere, it delivers modern home-style Italian cooking rooted in seasonal produce, personal heritage and genuine care.

The restaurant’s story is one of family continuity. The original Zia Rina’s Cucina was established and lovingly run by Rina D’Alessandro, a southern Italian-born cook whose dream was to create a beautiful little Italian restaurant that felt like someone’s home. After her passing in late 2017, the venue was taken over by her cousin, chef Danny Natoli (formerly of Neptune), together with long-time collaborator Adrian Li. They have preserved the intimate spirit while gently evolving the cooking into contemporary Italian dishes with thoughtful, sometimes playful touches drawn from personal heritage and the best of the day’s market and farm produce.

Today Rina’s operates as a set-menu-only venue. The multi-course experience currently sits at $88 per person and changes daily according to what is freshest from small farms and local markets. There is no printed menu handed out; instead the kitchen crafts a snapshot of the season influenced by heritage, emotion and respect for the produce. Guests are asked to note any dietary requirements at the time of booking so the team can accommodate them. A sample of past dishes has included kingfish crudo with avocado, green tomato and finger lime; primavera tart; prosciutto fiocco with melon; padrón peppers with smoked anchovy; spaghettini cacio e pepe; fennel-and-black-pepper-crusted pork; asparagus with bottarga; and cannoli to finish. Handmade pastas, slow-cooked ragùs that simmer from morning, and generous antipasti plates appear regularly, always with an emphasis on flavour and integrity rather than fuss.

The dining room itself reinforces the sense of welcome. Dim lighting, striking terrazzo floors, stripped walls, a visible kitchen pass and shelves of bottles create a rustic yet refined trattoria feel. Tables are close enough for conversation yet private enough for a special night out. Service is attentive and personal; regulars are often remembered, and the team is happy to guide diners through the evening’s offerings and wine suggestions. The short, carefully chosen list leans towards southern Italian bottles alongside selected Australian wines, available by the bottle, glass or smaller “piccolo” serve. BYO wine is welcomed at $25 corkage per bottle (restrictions apply for larger groups).

Rina’s has earned consistently strong praise for its food, value and atmosphere, with high ratings on major platforms. It is the kind of place where you settle in for the long haul rather than a quick turnaround — exactly as intended. Whether you are celebrating a special occasion, enjoying a date night or simply seeking comforting Italian cooking done with real skill and heart, this little Armadale gem delivers.
