Fee-Fi-Fo-Yum: Why Jake & the Beans Talk Is Malvern East’s Favourite Family Café

Tucked along Waverley Road in Malvern East, Jake & the Beans Talk is the kind of neighbourhood café that feels like it has always belonged there. The name is a playful nod to the fairy tale, but the reality is even better: a family-run brunch spot serving excellent Five Senses coffee, generous plates and a genuinely warm welcome. Locals treat it as their living room. Visitors leave planning their next visit.

The café sits at 510 Waverley Road, just minutes from East Malvern station and handy for anyone heading to the local football. Open weekdays from 7am and weekends from 8am (closing at 3pm), it has become one of the busiest breakfast and lunch destinations on this side of Melbourne — and it still manages to feel personal.

A family dream that grew into a local landmark

The story begins with Pietrina. She had always been a foodie and dreamed of a family hospitality venture. Once her children reached adulthood, their combined skills in hospitality, business and trade made the idea possible. The name itself was settled over a glass of red wine during a naming session; “Jake” ended up front and centre, and the beanstalk pun stuck.

What they built is more than a café. Staff and regulars are treated as extended family. The fit-out is fresh and considered — wooden furnishings, white tiled counters, plenty of greenery — yet it never feels precious. It is the sort of place where you can bring the dog to the heated front footpath, park the pram in the enclosed courtyard, or simply sit inside with a long black and the paper.

A newer courtyard, built by family members, plus a Marco batch brewer, have made the space even more comfortable through Melbourne’s four-seasons-in-one-day weather. Heated outdoor areas mean you can sit outside most of the year. Pets are welcome at the front; the back courtyard is enclosed and heated.

Coffee that holds its own

Coffee is taken seriously here. The team run a Synesso machine and pour Five Senses — the Crompton Road blend plus rotating single origins. Reviewers consistently single out the coffee as silky, consistent and worth the trip on its own. Whether you want a straightforward long black, a matcha latte or something from the batch brewer, the baristas deliver.

The menu: generous, colourful and full of personality

Jake & the Beans Talk does all-day breakfast and lunch with a creative streak. Standouts that keep appearing in reviews and on the café’s own socials include:

  • Brekky Gnocchi — gnocchi with poached eggs, chorizo, mushrooms, green peas, caramelised onion, cherry tomatoes, roasted sweet potato, dukkah hollandaise and burnt butter. It is frequently recommended as the dish to order first.
  • Poke Bowl — katsu chicken, quinoa rice, corn, edamame, pickled carrots, pickled ginger, cucumber, avocado, katsu sauce, soy and wasabi mayo. Bright, balanced and popular with both locals and visitors.
  • Brisket Benny — homemade potato hash stack, slow-cooked beef brisket, poached eggs, hollandaise, broccolini, cherry tomato and lemon-herb gremolata (crispy tofu available).
  • Breakfast Greens Bruschetta — two poached eggs, feta and lemon gremolata over broccolini, asparagus, spinach, mushrooms, carrot, cherry tomatoes and caramelised onion with garlic thyme butter.
  • Other regulars: Mexican Benedict, Snickers French toast, steak sandwich, fish tacos and a solid big breakfast.

The kitchen is happy to accommodate vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free requests (always mention dietary needs when you order). Portions are generous, flavours are bold, and presentation is colourful without being fussy. Occasional Sunday burger nights (cheeseburger, brisket, halloumi, vegan options and a kids’ menu) give regulars another reason to return.

Who it suits

This is a neighbourhood gem that works for almost everyone: couples catching up, families with young children (staff are frequently praised for being brilliant with kids), solo coffee drinkers, and groups who need a table on a Saturday morning. The vibe is energetic rather than hushed — expect a happy buzz rather than a library. Street parking is limited, so walking, cycling or public transport is often easiest.

Google reviewers give it around 4.6 from hundreds of ratings. Common themes: friendly service (Lulu and the team get regular shout-outs), consistently good coffee, creative food and a place that feels looked after.
