Parkside Wine, Malvern East: The Neighbourhood Wine Bar That Invites You to Stay

Malvern East has long been known for its parks, family streets and quiet evenings. What it lacked, until recently, was a proper night-time local — the kind of place you could drop into after work, linger over a glass, share a pizza and still feel like you belonged. Parkside Wine, at 512 Waverley Road, filled that gap.

Owner Matt Vero, already well known from venues including the Mount Erica Hotel, The Orrong Hotel and Railway Wine Bar, opened the bar (originally styled Parkside Local) after spotting an unused gym-and-office space on the Waverley Road strip. The team gutted and rebuilt it into a warm, olive-green room with exposed red-brick walls, tall wooden tables, wine shelves and a courtyard that pulls people outside when the weather allows.

“We’re certainly more of a neighbourhood wine bar than a fancy wine bar,” Vero has said. “We want to make sure there’s something for everyone, reasonable prices, and encourage people to come in every day and try us out.” That spirit still defines the place.

The façade is straightforward and welcoming: the word PARKSIDE painted across the old brick, “LOCAL” on the awning, and the simple promise of food, wine, beers and cocktails. Picnic tables sit on the footpath. Inside, the lighting is low and flattering, the booths are comfortable, and the room is designed for conversation rather than spectacle.

The wine list is considered rather than showy. Most bottles are approachable Australian wines — sparkling, white, orange, rosé and red — with a handful of European bottles for variety. Glasses and bottles are both available; takeaway bottles come with 20 per cent off. Happy hour runs weekdays from 4pm to 6pm, with house wines, pints and cocktails at approachable prices. Non-alcoholic options, tap beer and classic cocktails (Espresso Martini, Negroni, Old Fashioned, spritzes) sit alongside the wine.

Food is unfussy and well matched to the drinks. Pizzas come from Teo’s, the neighbourhood pizza kitchens Vero also co-owns in Malvern and Highett; they are made in a kitchen at the back of the venue. Favourites include a classic Margherita, a Tropicana-style Hawaiian, and the signature with San Daniele prosciutto, stracciatella, rocket and parmesan. Share plates, cheese boards, calamari, fries and salads fill out the menu. Gluten-friendly and vegetarian options are clearly marked.

Weekly specials give locals a reason to return: Tuesday trivia (hosted with The Weekly Fifty, 7–9pm, bookings recommended) often paired with a $20 parma; Wednesday’s slow-cooked meatball sub; Thursday pasta night; Sunday pizza-and-pint deal. The kitchen closes at 9pm.

The courtyard and two dining rooms also work for private gatherings — birthdays, engagements, corporate dinners or casual buy-outs. The venue can take 80-plus standing guests and offers flexible food-and-drink packages. Street parking is available and trams 5 and 64 stop nearby.

Parkside Wine has quickly become part of the local rhythm. It appears at community events such as the East Malvern Food & Wine Festival in Central Park and hosts groups ranging from school parents to footy watchers. Google reviewers currently rate it around 4.8 from dozens of visits, praising the easy atmosphere, consistent food and the feeling that staff actually want you there.

It is not trying to be the loudest or most exclusive bar in Melbourne. It is trying to be the one you walk to on a Tuesday, stay later than planned on a Friday, and recommend to the neighbour you bump into on Waverley Road. In a suburb that already has excellent parks and schools, that kind of local matters.
