Kanteen: From Riverside Amenities Block to South Yarra’s Favourite All-Day Café

Along Alexandra Avenue on a leafy bend of the Yarra River, Kanteen is one of those rare Melbourne spots that feels a world away from the bustle of Chapel Street and Toorak Road. What was once a humble public amenities block has been transformed into a much-loved indoor-outdoor café where locals, cyclists, walkers, families and well-behaved dogs gather for coffee, breakfast and lunch with a view. Established in 2002 and still under the same owner, it remains a South Yarra institution more than two decades on.

The building itself is instantly recognisable: a rustic timber-slatted structure with a lime-green door, clear plastic flap walls that let in light and river views while keeping out the worst of the weather, and a large outdoor terrace shaded by a magnificent old tree. In summer the sides open to the breeze; in winter bar heaters keep the space cosy. The outlook is across the water towards Herring Island, with the Yarra Trail running right past the door — the perfect pit-stop after a walk, ride or ferry trip to the island.

Kanteen is unashamedly dog-friendly. Water bowls are provided, leashed pets are welcome on the terrace, and the relaxed gravel-and-timber setting suits a lazy weekend brunch as easily as a midweek coffee. Children wander freely, share tables of granite and wood fill up with groups, and the cabinet of cakes, slices and biscuits is hard to walk past.

Breakfast is the star of the menu. Regulars return for the oven-baked Spanish eggs with chorizo, Napoli sauce, Manchego and goats’ cheese, served with pide; the black sticky rice with banana, strawberry, mango and coconut milk; toasted avocado pide; and hearty options such as smashed minted peas with smoked salmon or loaded sweet potato with spinach, feta and a poached egg. Lunch brings Turkish pides, salads (including a Vietnamese-style coleslaw), daily curries or gnocchi, burgers and classic sandwiches. Gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan choices are available, and the coffee is consistently praised. Prices sit in the mid-range for the quality and setting.

The atmosphere is easy-going rather than polished — a genuine neighbourhood café that happens to occupy one of the prettiest stretches of the inner-city river. It is popular with people who have just walked the trail, cyclists heading between the city and the south-eastern suburbs, and anyone who wants a change from the usual high-street scene. Parking is available nearby, and public transport (trams and nearby Burnley or South Yarra stations) makes it accessible.

Next time you are following the Yarra Trail or looking for a riverside breakfast that feels like a small escape, look for the timber slats and the “kanteen” sign. It is still one of South Yarra’s most distinctive and welcoming spots — a converted amenities block that has become a destination in its own right.
