Saddle Up for Pony: Armadale’s Sunny Neighbourhood Gem Blending Vintage Charm with Modern Bistro Vibes

In the charming Beatty Avenue in Armadale, Pony Bar & Restaurant has quickly become a local favourite since opening in late 2023. This inviting neighbourhood spot combines relaxed elegance, excellent cocktails, and standout Modern Australian fare in a space that feels both fresh and familiar. Whether you’re popping in for a midweek drink, a weekend roast, or a full dining experience, Pony delivers approachable sophistication with genuine warmth.

A Neighbourhood Restaurant with Personality

Pony occupies a beautifully restored building at 14 Beatty Avenue, its distinctive green-tiled facade hinting at the sunny interiors within. Owners Emily Stribley and Michael Valentine, known for their popular Neighbourhood Pizza nearby, set out to create something more elevated yet still casual and fun. The name “Pony,” inspired by a horseshoe spotted on the building (a symbol of prosperity and good fortune), perfectly captures the venue’s lucky, welcoming spirit.

Step inside and you’re greeted by a sun-filled front bar area featuring canary yellow and robin-egg blue panelling, burnt orange curtains, and leadlight windows. Upstairs, an intimate dining space with high ceilings, blue velvet banquettes, and an open kitchen view offers a more relaxed yet refined atmosphere. The design, led by Stribley (a graphic designer by trade), strikes a balance between classic Melbourne wine bar aesthetics and personal touches that make it feel like a home away from home. Outdoor seating extensions further enhance the alfresco appeal, especially during Melbourne’s warmer months.

Standout Menu Highlights

Pony’s menu, helmed by chef Mark Jennings (ex-Square and Compass), focuses on quality produce, sharing plates, and crowd-pleasing dishes executed with precision. It’s not trying to reinvent the wheel but excels at the classics with thoughtful twists.

Signature items include the cult-worthy beef cheeseburger ($25), featuring juicy patties topped with molten raclette, caramelised onions, pickles, and a secret burger sauce. Reviewers consistently hail it as one of Melbourne’s best. Other highlights are the whole butterflied chargrilled chicken with salsa verde, poached prawns with aioli and margarita salt, and pan-seared snapper with harissa and lemon.

For sharing, try the chickpeas in broth with tomatoes and harissa, or the substantial baked spinach and ricotta dumplings. Steak lovers will appreciate the 300g scotch fillet with chimichurri. Vegetarian options and snacks like flatbread ensure broad appeal. Desserts, such as the brown butter budino (a decadent Italian-style pot de crème with caramel and whipped cream), provide a sweet finish.

On Sundays, the venue offers a popular rotating Sunday Roast for $39, complete with all the trimmings—perfect for families or groups. Reservations are recommended, especially for weekends.

Cocktails, Wine & Vibes

The drinks programme shines thanks to bar manager Dylan Field (ex-Gimlet). Standout cocktails include the Spicy Lynette (a spicy Margarita), Penny Sipper, and Johnny O’Moore, many named after the owners’ family members. The wine list balances approachable Australian drops with interesting European selections, complemented by a solid beer offering.

Pony’s service is frequently praised as outstanding—friendly, knowledgeable, and relaxed—making it ideal for date nights, group gatherings, or casual catch-ups. The venue can accommodate private events in its upstairs spaces, with capacities suited for intimate parties or larger bookings.
