Simon West Fine Jewellery, Armadale: Design Your Own Engagement Ring With a Goldsmith Who Started as an Apprentice on the Murray

Some people walk into a jeweller with a clear picture of the ring they want. Many more don't, and at Simon West Fine Jewellery that's exactly how it should be. "You don't need to arrive with a finished design in mind — that's what we're here for," the team says. At its showroom at Suite 5, 927 High Street, Armadale, you can try on pieces, look at different stones and styles, and work through ideas until the design feels right.

From a Murray River apprenticeship to High Street

Simon West's love of jewellery began in 1993 in his hometown of Cobram on the Murray River, where he started his career as a gold and platinumsmith apprentice. He moved to Melbourne in 1995, immersing himself in the craft, and in October 1999 opened Simon West Fine Jewellery with a simple belief: every piece of jewellery should carry a personal touch and help make life's most meaningful moments even more special.

A lifelong admirer of the Art Deco era, Simon found a home for his city boutique in Melbourne's Manchester Unity Building. Today the business welcomes clients at both the city showroom and its Armadale showroom on High Street.

Every ring starts with a conversation

Each custom piece begins with a talk about your ideas, preferences and budget. The team then helps refine the design and choose a diamond or gemstone, and prepares a detailed design drawing for your approval before anything is made. You don't need to be an expert in stones, either: the team sources a selection to suit your design and explains the differences so you can choose with confidence. Simon West works with natural diamonds, laboratory-grown diamonds and coloured gemstones, with no pressure towards one option or another.

Handcrafted in Melbourne

Once the stone is chosen, it's entrusted to the business's experienced gold and platinumsmiths, who handcraft each piece in the Melbourne workshop using traditional jewellery-making techniques. The business has built long-standing relationships with diamond cutters and gemstone suppliers, from Antwerp, Mumbai and Surat to local Melbourne suppliers, and says it works with suppliers who share its commitment to responsible sourcing and transparency.

As well as engagement rings, the team makes wedding and eternity bands, earrings and one-of-a-kind pieces, and backs its workmanship with a lifetime guarantee against manufacturing faults, plus in-house cleaning and servicing.

New life for family heirlooms

One of the most meaningful jobs a jeweller can do is reimagine a piece that has been passed down. Simon West welcomes inherited jewellery, older designs you no longer wear and loose stones you'd like to reset, assessing what can be reused and designing something that feels more like you while keeping the sentiment of the original.

Clients clearly value the experience. One couple described the process of making their engagement ring, wedding bands and earrings as "very personal and a true collaboration", while another wrote that Simon "demystified every complexity of the process" for someone who knew nothing about jewellery and diamonds.
