The Country Women's Association of Victoria, Toorak: Women Supporting Women Since 1928

Behind the address 3 Lansell Road, Toorak, is an organisation that reaches every corner of the state. This is the home of The Country Women's Association of Victoria, a vibrant, volunteer philanthropic organisation of women supporting women, children and families right across Victoria. The CWA sums itself up in a single line: "We cook, we craft and we advocate for change, while always remaining relevant."

Nearly a century of friendship and service

The Country Women's Association of Victoria was formed on 12 March 1928, and today it has approximately 5,000 members. Each member belongs to one of about 300 branches across Victoria. Every branch maintains its own program and is empowered to meet the needs of its own community, while also supporting statewide initiatives. That local-and-statewide approach is a big part of how the association has stayed so active for almost a hundred years.

Friendship, growth and advocacy

The CWA describes its focus as friendship, personal development and advocacy. Members are encouraged to support each other, to make a difference in their communities, and to speak up on community issues, sustainable development, protection of the environment and social issues. For many women, it is a place to make lifelong friends while doing something worthwhile.

Grants, scholarships and leadership

The association's generosity extends beyond its own membership. The CWA of Victoria awards education grants and scholarships to both members and non-members, and it provides training and leadership opportunities for its members. It also delivers a Household Financial Relief Program, details of which are available on its website.

A global network of women

Joining the CWA connects members with women around the world. Through the Associated Country Women of the World, which has non-government organisation status with several United Nations agencies, members of the Victorian association are part of a truly global network.

Not just for the country

Despite the name, the CWA is very much part of city life too, and its headquarters sit right here in Toorak. The association has day, night and weekend branches to suit different schedules, so working women, retirees and young mums can all find a group that fits. Its website has a branch finder, upcoming events and its magazine, the Victorian Country Woman.
