Just off the bustle of Toorak Road on a leafy residential side street, Tivoli Road Bakery has long been one of Melbourne’s most reliable addresses for proper artisan baking. At 3 Tivoli Road, South Yarra, this modest bakery-café continues to turn out stone-baked organic sourdough, buttery viennoiserie and those famous filled doughnuts that first put it on the map, all made daily with a clear-eyed commitment to simple, excellent ingredients.
The space itself is unpretentious and welcoming. Large windows look out onto the tree-lined street and straight into the working bakery, so you can watch loaves emerging from the stone hearth while you wait. Seating is limited and the atmosphere remains relaxed and neighbourhood-friendly — the kind of place locals treat as their daily bread run and visitors discover with genuine delight.
The Bread
Bread is the foundation here. Using certified organic flour and time-honoured techniques, the bakers produce a range of sourdoughs every morning. The signature stoneground sourdough is dark-baked for a caramelised crust and a chewy, open crumb. Alongside it you’ll usually find soy & linseed, spelt & honey, multigrain, fruit and olive loaves, plus a Turkish bread made from a slow-fermented poolish that regularly sells out. Special loaves appear through the week — heritage wholewheat, oat porridge, or macadamia & wattleseed among them. The philosophy is straightforward: flour, water and salt. No additives, no improvers, no stabilisers.

The Pastries and Sweets
The viennoiserie is equally serious. Expect classic croissants, pain au chocolat, almond croissants, escargots, fruit Danish and the distinctive macadamia & wattleseed praline. On Fridays to Sundays the morning buns appear — croissant pastry baked in a tin, dusted with cinnamon and orange sugar and filled with custard.
Then there are the doughnuts. These have developed a cult following over the years, with rotating flavours that have included salted caramel, crème brûlée, lemon curd and more. Tea cakes, cookies and tarts round out the sweet selection, while a daily run of pies, sausage rolls and pasties satisfies the savoury craving.
The Café Side
Beyond the bakery counter, Tivoli Road functions as a relaxed café for breakfast and lunch. Mornings might bring a warm croissant with butter and jam, a fruit Danish, a bacon-and-egg brioche roll with house tomato kasundi, or the house-made granola with seasonal fruit and yoghurt. At lunch the sandwiches shine — roast chicken with bread-and-butter pickles on soy & linseed, beetroot-cured salmon on rye, or more inventive combinations using the bakery’s own breads. Daily salads featuring grains, pulses and seasonal vegetables appear alongside the pies and sausage rolls.
Coffee comes from Small Batch Roasters in North Melbourne (espresso and cold drip), with teas from Storm in a Teacup and house-made sodas available too.

A South Yarra Institution
Originally opened in 2012 as MoVida Bakery under Frank Camorra, the business was taken over in 2013 by bakers Michael and Pippa James, who renamed it Tivoli Road Bakery and built its reputation for integrity and quality. In late 2018 it passed to new ownership (the team behind Little Cupcakes), who have continued the core offering. A second location later opened at 659 Whitehorse Road, Mont Albert, but the original South Yarra shop remains the heart of the operation — a genuine neighbourhood bakery that still feels special.
Whether you are collecting a still-warm loaf for the table, treating yourself to a doughnut and coffee, or simply pausing for a quiet moment on a tree-lined street, Tivoli Road Bakery delivers the quiet satisfaction of baking done properly.
