Tucked into a quieter corner of Hawksburn Village on Malvern Road, Rock Sugar brings a burst of neon energy, bold Thai flavours and seriously Instagrammable cocktails to South Yarra. Inspired by the hustle of Bangkok, the tropical palms of Phi Phi Island and the carefree spirit of a Full Moon Party, this modern Thai restaurant and bar has been rocking Melbourne’s dining scene since 2016 — and in August 2026 it is proudly celebrating its 10th birthday.

The venue occupies a heritage-listed building that once served as the childhood home of owner Nikon Souphan. What used to be his bedroom is now the main dining room, transformed by interior designers into a vibrant space of exposed brick, green tiling, pink neon and playful rock-hand signage. A covered courtyard with retractable roof, heating and cooling offers an inviting outdoor option year-round. The atmosphere is fun, buzzy and unpretentious — perfect for date nights, group celebrations or a lively midweek feed.
#RockingThai Food with a Modern Twist
Rock Sugar deliberately steers clear of the most traditional Thai staples (you won’t find som tum here) in favour of contemporary share plates that deliver big, balanced flavours. Curry pastes are made from scratch daily. Stand-out dishes often mentioned by regulars include the 18-hour Angus beef Massaman curry (potato, snake beans, peanuts and pickled shallots), Pad See Ew with the same slow-cooked beef, green chicken curry, soft-shell crab or chilli crab bao, saltgrass lamb spring rolls, and sticky fried chicken ribs with chilli caramel.
Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are well represented, and the kitchen happily accommodates dietary needs. On Sundays many skip the traditional roast in favour of a slow-cooked curry with rice for $29. Wednesdays are dedicated to #ROCKING Thai specials — noodles and stir-fries for $16, available for dine-in, takeaway or delivery.
For groups the “Feed Me” banquet options take the decision-making out of the evening. The Fun Size version lets tables of 2–9 build their own selection from $49 per person, while larger tables (10+) are required to order the full banquet for evening sittings.
#Rocktails – Same Same But Different
The drinks list is every bit as playful as the food. Signature “rocktails” remix classic recipes with tropical and Thai-inspired twists. The Cosmopolitan Fairy Floss Martini is the star: a beaker of martini mix poured over a cloud of fairy floss that dissolves theatrically in front of you. Other favourites include the Rockstar Martini (vanilla bean, passionfruit and housemade caramel), Spicy Margarita, Tamarind Sour, Blue Bird, and various espresso martini variations.

Rocktail Hour runs every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 4–6 pm with discounted selected cocktails, beers and wines. Full Moon Party-style buckets are available for larger groups, and cocktail classes (for 2–9 people) take place on Saturday afternoons — ideal for hens’ parties or team outings.
Functions, Private Dining & Celebrations
Rock Sugar’s private dining area and courtyard work well for birthdays, hens’ nights, corporate events and intimate gatherings. Banquet packages start from around $69–$79 per person, with optional cocktail trees, drinks packages and birthday cake shots available. Minimum spends apply; the team is happy to tailor menus for vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free or pescatarian groups. Gift vouchers are also available online.
