Just around the corner from Chapel Street, next to Prahran station, is a shop that calls itself a "rainbow world". Tibbs & Bones, at 99 Greville Street, is a colourful boutique of local, independent and international fashion labels, built on a simple idea: everyone is celebrated, just as they are.

From market stall to Greville Street
Tibbs & Bones is owned by couple Jade and Maddy. It began in 2014 as a clothing stall selling vintage pieces at local markets. Interest in online sales followed, and they created what they call "a magical online world", sourcing their favourite independent and "mind-bending" labels from Australia and abroad. After a lot of hard work, late nights, passion and love, they opened their first bricks-and-mortar store in Northcote in 2016.
In 2018, Chapel Street came calling and they opened a second shop there. When the pandemic forced the Northcote store to close in March 2020, the pair put all their energy into the Chapel Street shop, and they have since moved to their dream space on Greville Street. Jade and Maddy call this third version of Tibbs & Bones their most magical yet.
Express your true self
The store is a curation of local, independent and international brands that the owners say they are "so proud to represent", chosen so customers can express their true selves. You'll find everything from statement tops, corsets and kimonos to dresses, bodysuits, faux fur coats and bold footwear from labels such as Demonia and Tripp NYC.
Run by a small team, Tibbs & Bones says it is inspired every day by its customers' stories. There is no pressure, no ego and no judgement. The shop describes itself as a safe space for everyone, including the LGBTQIA+ community, to try on clothes and shoes, chat and enjoy the rainbow energy. "Kindness always!" is the motto.

Thoughtful about access
Tibbs & Bones goes out of its way to make its shop welcoming. Recognising that loud music, crowds and laser lights aren't for everyone, it runs Sensory Friendly Sessions on Tuesdays from 12pm to 5pm, with the lasers off and the music turned down. Noise-cancelling headphones are welcome, as are support animals at any time. The website also describes the entrance in detail: there are a few steps at the front, with rear roller-door access via a gentle slope for anyone who needs it. Just text or call ahead. The change rooms are generously sized too.

Shop online, collect in store
If you see something online, Tibbs & Bones offers free pick-up in store, so you can order from the website and collect at Greville Street. And with Chapel Street around the corner, the owners suggest making a day of it, exploring the area's thrift shops, cafés and other independent stores.
