Cucina Toorak, at 472 Toorak Road, has a motto that tells you exactly what to expect: "We don't sell food, we sell love." The Italian restaurant calls itself a love letter written in pasta, seafood and family recipes carried across generations, and its founder describes the menu as echoes of his childhood, reimagined.
It all started with a dream
The restaurant's story begins at the start of 2010. That year Gab, then 26, left Colleferro, a small town near Rome, and moved to Melbourne with what the restaurant describes as one bag full of dreams. The years that followed brought hard work, endless sleepless nights and a vision, and from them came Cucina Toorak. Gab, who calls himself founder and family man, has put those memories of home at the heart of every plate.
Classic Italian, redefined
The kitchen's approach is classic Italian, redefined for a contemporary Melbourne table. According to the restaurant, every dish is rooted in memory and every plate is served with intention. The recipes, it says, carry the fingerprints of family kitchens, but they are given a fresh, modern touch.
Pasta made every morning
Pasta is the star. Cucina Toorak's handcrafted pasta is made fresh each morning, and seafood is a big part of the menu, with fish and shellfish sourced from Australian waters. Alongside the pasta, the menu includes seafood starters and steak, so there is something for every appetite, along with a wine list to match.
An all-day Toorak Road table
The restaurant is open all day, from 12pm until late, which makes it easy to drop in for a long lunch, an early dinner or a late meal after a night out. Every day from 12pm to 3pm there is a lunch special with several options, each served with a glass of wine, which is a lovely way to enjoy a midweek break on Toorak Road.
Tables for celebrations
Cucina Toorak also welcomes groups. For tables of eight or more, a sharing menu is available, and pre-orders are welcome, which takes the stress out of organising birthday lunches, family gatherings and end-of-year celebrations.
